Malawi TeamCountry Manager's Message
A public administrator by profession, Maureen is passionate about making a difference in the lives of women and children across the globe.
A skilled community development and health advocate Maureen is an alumni of the Coady International Institute where she participated in the 2015 Global change leaders program. She is also the current AVAC fellow for Malawi and she is implementing an advocacy fellowship which aims at advocating for more HIV prevention options for women and young girls in Malawi. Maureen has also done a lot of voluntary work with different community groups and she is the Co-founder of Tikondane Community Development group, a group of men and women from Kalumba Village who are working towards developing their community. Maureen believes that rural communities need to be encouraged to take part in addressing their own challenges rather than relying on external support all the time and this has been her approach to all development activities which she has initiated with different communities. Maureen has always had passion for children and she believes that every child deserves to be loved and live a happy life. Her passion to work with children in hospitals and in prisons grew when she visited the two institutions at different occasions. ‘I remember spending a night at a hospital in the childrens’ ward with one of my friends whose kid sister was sick and admitted. I remember seing children who were very malnourished and in great pain. I also witnessed some children dying. 1 year later we received a visitor at our Organization who wanted to visit the prison, female section and I escorted him. When we went there we found some children less than 5 years old whose parents had been convicted on different offenses. It was at moment when I realized that I could do something atleast to help one or two kids either in prison or hospital. I believe it is not only the responsibility of the government to take care of children in prisons and hospitals, but as Citizens we can do a little something to improve the situation on the ground’. |
